Week 4: October 13

I hope everyone is enjoying the crazy SLO weather with extreme heat followed soon by those with howling chilly winds. Temperatures tend to stabilize in December so enjoy the fluctuations now.

Monday night things will continue to be low-key and fun and we'll be hosting a multitude of guests: We kick things off with our second installment of Meet the Faculty. Last time your questions were great so keep it up and these particular instructors are energetic and forthcoming. [Some more questions if you go blank: "What would you have done for a living if you hadn't gone into science?", "What was your least favorite course in college?", "Do you have a favorite scientist from history?", "Have you ever been in jail?"] Just kidding on that last one, I think.

Then it will be our second mini-lecture ["The Unfortunate Fates of Famous Scientists"] where Dr. Schoonover [yes, that's me] will examine the sometimes dark, all-too-human side of scientific exploration, discovery and heartache. Hopefully you'll be able to recognize some of the names.

We'll then turn it over to our student guests, who will talk briefly about the clubs and very are excited to visit.  I will then pass out a short assignment for the class to complete for the following Monday.

Lastly, here are this week's questions:
a) What has been an interesting thing you've learned this quarter in chemistry?
b) Are you willing to introduce yourself to at least 3 other CHEM 101 students in class tomorrow?
c) If you could choose a superpower* to have, what would it be?

*Note: Absorbing other people's powers or some other BS miscellaneous, noncommittal answer is lame. Oh, and this might be a good question to ask one of our faculty guests. :)

a)The most interesting thing I have learned this quarter in chem is monatomic elements and how they are isoelectric.
b) Yes I am willing to introduce myself to three people in class tomorrow.
c)The super power I would have would be to breathe underwater. And be able to live there.

a)Probably the periodic trends X_X
b)Sure, why not
c)I'd like to fly

A.) Most interesting would have to be that when you learn neurons connect and you have to sleep to let those neurons connect and form.

B.) Yeah ill introduce myself

C.) I would be the blue guy from xmen 3

a) the most interesting thing i learned was how to blow a balloon up. all i need to know now is how to get pure hydrogen :)
b) of course i want to meet people!
c) i'd want to teleport, because i could be anywhere i wanted to. so when i wake up at 8:09 for my 8:10 chem class it wont be a big deal

a) I learned that rubber cement and hot days do not mix.

b) I guess I'm willing, but I don't really want to.

c) Flying, for sure!

a) Someone taught me this cute little phrase "For clean breath have no onions" which tells me which elements on the periodic table are diatomic.
b)I'm down.
c)I would like to teleport. I'm lazy. =]

a) One of the most interesting things I've learned is how to light a match. I'm not joking, I could never do it before I had to in lab this quarter! :-P
b) Of course I'm willing to meet people!
c) I'd want the superpower of instant healing. That way I wouldn't have to go to med school to help people ;-)

2. yeah ill introduce myself
3. my super power would be to read peoples minds and pick things up using my mind, like dr. Xavier from xmen.

a) Sleep is good
b) Yep
c) I would have the ability to have random theme music play on command, and everyone could hear it

a) Even though I've sort of learned about it before, I loved learning about light and spectroscopy, and putting on those awesome glasses on lab.
b) I'd love to meet more people.
c) I think I'd pick flying, not to be unoriginal or anything. I think it'd be incredible.

a) an interesting thing I have learned this quarter in chemistry is that when an electron is traveling through an orbital and comes across a note it basically teleports across the node and continues on.
b)I am more than willing to introduce myself to three other people in class.
c)If I could have any super power it would be teleporting like that of Nightcrawler in the X-Men series.

a) I know a few people already said it, but I liked learning about how sleep is critical for neurons to connect in the brain.

b) Sure I'm down

c) Being able to teleport would just make my life so much easier.

a) Again, the importance of sleep to allow the neurons to connect and form was the most interesting thing to me.

b) Definitely.

c) I always thought reading minds would be pretty cool.

a) probably the orbitals was the most interesting thing because they're fun to draw
b) sure.?
c) i would have the power to teleport so i could see the world and come back whenever i wanted.

a)the periodic trends that tell you which elements react the most explosively
b)i guess
c)definitely to fly

Anonymous said...

a)The most interesting thing in chemistry this quarter is slowly seeing why the periodic table is set up the way it is.

b)Of course

c)For sure flying!

a)i've learned that study breaks and naps are a good plan.
b)sure, why not?
c)i want to be able to clap my hands (because i can't snap my fingers) and have anything i want materialize in front of me.

a. Ive learned that deBrogelie was a flamboyant Frenchman and Ive learned I kinda like nomenclature.
b. Sure!
c. hmmm...either teleportation or stopping time (cuz i never have enuf!)

a) the most interesting thing i've learned all quarter is that metabolism of vampire lecture
b)yes
c) either to be able to turn into any animal or to control time

writing this after class.
a) visualizing 3 dimensional nodes in orbitals was pretty cool, and learning about quantization.
b) already did
c) I would have the ability to chemically add or subtract the number of protons/electrons in atoms with my mind. (I got this idea from Kristin's super power, except mine is totally more awesome.)

a)i think how the size, electron affinity, etc, are sorta related
b) sure, did
c) either teleporting or flying

a. n / a
b. um...sure!!
c. invisibility
