Also, I'm not sure you have heard, but Dr. Schoonover [me] conducts an annual Chemical Tribute to Halloween [pumpkins + destruction = performance art] outside of the Faculty Offices East Building. This year it will be Thursday at 6:30 pm and of course you're all invited, as long as you don't mind the [slight] possibility of being slimed by pumpkin shrapnelguts.
This week's questions, and I hope to get a better response percentage than a lame 50% of the class this time:
- For which of the 24 registration periods for Winter are you scheduled (3rd, 17th, etc)? Are you concerned or happy about this?
- Which factor is most important to you when selecting courses for next quarter: times of classes, MWF vs Tu/Th schedules, the instructor, or other? Elaborate if you'd like.
- Now that you're halfway through your first quarter at Cal Poly, how well do you feel that you were prepared from your high school experiences?
- There has been much speculation that the US, and the rest of the world, is headed towards a deep global recession (if not an outright depression). What worries do you have, if any, how this might affect you as a student? Do you think such an economic downturn would change the culture of college as you know it?

1) I'm on the 13th at 7am. I would, of course, be happier if I was on the 12th, but I'm not too mad.
2) I'd have to say which day of the week and which professor is the most important. But, the professor usually is the deciding factor. Although, I do like leaving on the weekends..so having no class on Friday would make that easier.
3) I don't think high school prepared us well at all. Taking AP courses helped, but the difference in workload is ridiculous.
4) Going into a depression is never a good thing. But especially being in college, and if your parents are paying for you, it makes it much harder on them. Plus, when we graduate and go into the workforce, we'll be paying higher taxes for a long time. And while we're in college, there are going to be more and more budget cuts for us.
1) have no idea, how do i find out?
2) time and day are important. for example chem lab must be in the morning.
3) i was very prepared. college is so much easier than high school.
4) recession = cant afford college?? money market accounts are heavily affected by stock drop. less speculative ways to earn money such as CDs and bonds will make much less APY = less money earned off investments = less scholarships

1. I am 3rd I believe but I am not sure I get to register at 3pm on the 13th! I am excited about getting to register at least kind of early!
2. Most important factor is that they are all in the morning and I go to at lest two classes a day!
3. I feel like I was really prepared in high school for college. College doesn't seem that much harder than high school well at least for me.
4. I am worried about the depression I think that we are going to have one if we don't start doing something about it SOON!!!! As a student it would definitely affect me because a lot of activitives I do would be cut short and I wouldn't have the money to do them!
1. I have no idea. But its not till November, so I'll find out before then...
2. Teachers and time of day.
3. I feel very prepared for college. College is actually easier because I have less time in class and can make my own schedule. The workload is actually less for me too.
4. I don't know much about economics, but I know I'm screwed. College is already hard financially, and its going to get worse.
1) I am first priority! It's cool that I will get the classes I want, but at the same time I have to register at 7 am ugh..
2) For me the most important thing is what time of the day and the professor. I don't like night classes particularly, and if I have a favorite prof I will look for them specifically.
3) I feel prepared in certain subjects. For example my chem teacher was fantastic so that class is going well, but calc was a bit of a struggle early on because my math teacher was dreadful.
4) I am quite concerned about the recession because of how hard it will be to pay for college. Also if the economy continues to suck who knows what the job market will look like when we get out of school.
1) I'm on the 13th at 11:00 am and I am indifferent.
2)This time around, the instructor is going to be the deciding factor for me. Not to say that I am unhappy with the professors I have now (well, with one exception).
3)I am way overprepared for college. The whole experience so far has been completely underwhelming.
4)Ugh, economics...not my department.
1. Nov 17 at 7:00 am?! Well, at least it's better than dead last....
2. Professor would be my first priority, then time of class
3. High school workload was much more compared to now
4. Recession = less money in economy = less money towards education....
1)November 12th at 11am. Hopefully I'll be able to make it to a computer from my lab course, which ends at 11.
2)Day of the week is most important, and professor is a close second.
3)Very well, actually... I haven't had to study for either of my Math and Science courses, and I did fairly well on my midterms.
4)I'm a little worried about the university shutting down, but I kind of figure it's a good time to be in school. The lack of career opportunities doesn't really affect me until I get out of school, so hopefully by then, the worst will be over. Finding a job now, though...
1) I have first priority! wooohooo!!!
2) I'm taking alot of classes and labs so I just want to make sure I get them all before I worry about times and teachers and such
3) I think the high school course material was helpful in preparation because most of my classes are review right now, but a full college schedule is way more intense than high school
4) The downward spiraling economy has me a bit nervous, because it could definitely affect me as a college student...my parents probably wont be able to afford the tuition so I would have to either come home or find some miracle to pay for school. We're just getting our lives started, so this could ruin everything!
1. an on the 13th at 3pm. i think thats the 6th rotation. im pretty happy with it. its a good one.
2. i think the most important thing is the professor and then the days of the week.
3. i dont think high school prepared us alright. the work load is completely different and is nothing like high school but its not like i dont know how to study...
4. money is always a big concern, even when the country isnt in a recession. i just know that i have to work better with the money that i have. i know that my parents will be able to pay for less and ill have to pay for more. just something that everyone had to et used to. as for the culture of college, it will probably take people longer to get out of school....even past the 5 year mark. if the student has to pay more they have to spend more time working to pay for school and less time actually at school.
1) I'm 6th rotation, and I'm really happy because I was 10th last time.
2) The most important factor in my schedule planning is the time/day because I like to take naps in the afternoon and to go home friday mornings.
3) I feel really well prepared; my classes are actually pretty...accomodating?
4) Of course a depression would change the culture of college, and I am worried, but the fact that we are so aware of the situation gives me hope that we can turn the situation around.
1)I think im 5th... :)
2)Professor is most important and then time. Having no class on Friday would be nice too.
3)I think high school prepared me well by teaching me good study habits but there is much more work
4)I am concerned about the recession but I HATE economics so I try not to worry about it
1) 12th at 7 am .. awesome :D
2) teacher, and time
3) i feel i was well prepared during high school, nothing feels too difficult or unachievable
4)i believe we will start looking at some changes in the population if the economy keeps going down, even less people will be able to obtain a college education due to the lack of education funds, there will be less jobs for college people, so there will be more competition. and those who have loans, if they don't have a job, will struggle with debt
1)3 pm on the 17th.
2) I really REALLY like not having classes on Fridays so that will definitely play into my schedule. Also learned the hard way that I can't do class after 6 pm.
3)High school lied about college. Take that as you will.
4) The last thing the california school system needs is another budget cut. Plus, my dad works at a university (not this one), so when the university's budged is cut, our entire family is hurt. And a lot of really smart kids have to drop out or lose aid. It's not a good situation at all. Plus, the smaller towns built around colleges are hurt.
1)i'm on the 13th at 11. that's pretty early so i'm happy
2)time of day and the professor are important
3)i think that high school ap classes did pretty well in preparing me
4)worried about paying for college and finding a job
1) I am Friday, Nov. 21 at 11:00.
2) I'd rather have classes in the morning than the evening, but I'd like to have the good professors...I don't think I'll get too much of a choice though because my registration is so late.
3) I feel like my high school education has prepared me really well. Most of the stuff we're doing in chem right now I've already seen in AP Chem, and same with Calculus. I feel like it gave me a really good foundation for the basics.
4) Economics are really not my thing, but recession sucks. School is going to be really hard to pay for, and on top of that, it'll be harder to find a job.
1) I'm 18th out of the 24 registration periods..I definitely would like to have been sooner.
2) Depends on the times and teachers, and I do like having lab on Tuesdays.
3) I felt that I was pretty well prepared. Obviously the material is more difficult, but nothing is overly hard or overly easy.
4) College is already hard enough for my parents to pay for, and this will not help.
A)I am 18th and I am worried that I might not get all of my classes, although spring quarter I will be 2nd so that makes me happy.
B)the time of the class is the most important because i am a morning person and so i want early classes.
C)My high school did not prepare me for the college experience, although what do you expect from the school district with the lowest test scores in CA.
D)I'm sure that an all out depression would effect my college life but i will worry about that what that day comes.
